He who lived on the land and has legs

Hi everyone. I wanted to write a short story forcing myself into a specific theme. Since I was a little afraid of online contest, such as NaNoWriMo, I decided to try myself with something easier: #MerMay.

#MerMay is a little challenge posted in the community of animators and illustrators. I heard of it from my fiancee, who’s an illustrator. The challenge was to post a new mermaid illustration every day of May 2017.

I decided to go for something smaller, a single short story. I started doing a little brainstorming, throwing out ideas for my main character: age (38), occupation (singer by night, aquarium trainer by day), a fear and a need, etc. Then I decided to choose a name for her. Since one of the most famous mermaid is the Disney one, Ariel, I did some research. The name Ariel means “lion of god”, I liked it and i dug deeper into that website with meaning and origins of all the name you could think of. I wrote down a short list of names who had something in common with “lion” and my attention was caught by Llewelyn which means “lioness” in welsh. Very nice name, often shortened to Lyn. I really liked it. So, just to push me a little further I decided to research a little of welsh folklore about mermaids, and i put on some welsh folk music to ease my brain into the right mood.

At that point I got a little distracted, I don’t know how exactly but instead of a short story I wrote a song. Unfortunately, I’m not a singer and my English accent is far from good. Yet I wanted to hear of the song played, so I recorder it. I hope you can enjoy it.

Here’re the lyrics of the song, if you want you can switch on the subtitles on YouTube to karaoke it. šŸ˜›

She was taken to his house of stone
He who lived on the land and had legs
He loved her and kept her for days
He who lived on the land and had legs
She looked at him and learned his life
He who lived on the land and had legs

He was strange and she was not in love
Cause he threw the water after boiling the eggs
She felt weak and wanted lo leave
He who lived on the land and had legs
He felt her pain and was sad too
He who lived on the land and had legs

He opened the door and closed his eyes
He who lived on the land and had legs
She walked away and he followed her
He who lived on the land and had legs
Her family was waiting in fears and tears
She entered the water and shine of the moon

He who lived on the land and had legs
Watched from the shore and heard their words
She told them of the person she met
He who lived on the land and had legs
He who threw the water after boiling the eggs
He who lived on the land and had legs
